TEMPE, Arizona – David Johnson got his money.
The Arizona Cardinals long distance runner signed a three-year extension on Saturday, the team said.
The agreement covers $ 39 million, including $ 30 million guaranteed, and can go up to $ 45 million, said a source to Adam Schefter.
Johnson's $ 30 million secured money is the third highest figure among active clients.
Earlier this week, Johnson said he wanted his agreement reached as soon as possible.
"Every player wants to make a contract and know he has a contract," Johnson said.
Now he does it.
Johnson said this summer that he wanted a new deal. He held himself out of the minicamp of Arizona in June but went to training camp. However, his imminent contract was a constant subject every time Johnson spoke publicly.
Johnson's extension came the night before he was about to enter the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, which was worth $ 2.9 million. He had to win $ 1.9 million this season.
His new agreement is not without questions.
Johnson, 26, has been injured in his last two games. Last week, he suffered a broken wrist that forced him to miss the last 15 games. He also suffered a sprain at the MCL during week 17 in 2016, putting an end to an impressive season.
However, when Johnson was healthy in 2016, he was an All-Pro and a Pro Bowler for the first time. This season, Johnson has rushed for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns on 293 carries. He completed that with 879 yards and four touchdowns on 80 catches. Johnson led the NFL with 2,118 years and 373 contacts in 2016.
Johnson's 32 touchdowns since the scrum since 2015 are the second most important of this period. Gurley and Devonta Freeman were each 35 years old.
Johnson was a third-round pick in 2015 from the University of Northern Iowa.
Keeping Johnson under contract throughout the 2021 season will pair him with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, whom the Cardinals have placed 10th this season, giving Arizona its base for the foreseeable future.
