New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway said this time was coming during his pregame news conference, and he made good on that Friday night.
David Wright came in for the fifth inning, pinch-hitting for Paul Sewald for his first time since 2016. Wright did not waste much time on the plate, whacking the first pitch for a chopper first.
He took his time heading back to the dugout, saluting the fans who had been on their feet for an inning already.
The cheers initially erupted around Citi Field as Wright stepped into the on-deck circle in the fourth inning, but he had to wait just a little more when Kevin Plawecki grounded out to end the frame. The out incited boos from the expectant crowd.
The Mets captain is scheduled to start on Saturday afternoon and not play in the final season on Sunday, according to Callaway.
The final week of the 2018 season is a set of events for the team.

The team had a chance to go back to the past, but interim general manager John Ricco clarified that on Tuesday. Ricco said Wright would only be an option to hit Atlanta if the game was a blowout.
