ST. PAUL – The governor of Minnesota said he suffered lung damage during his convalescence on the back, staying at the Mayo Clinic for more than a month.

Governor Mark Dayton underwent two spinal fusion operations last month to improve the strength of his legs and was to be released from the hospital in the coming days. His office gave no official information about his status until this week, a spokesman for Dayton confirmed that he was staying at the hospital for what was described as a "physical therapy".

The 71-year-old governor said in an e-mailed statement Thursday that postoperative complications had damaged his lungs, without providing further details. Dayton said he stayed at the Mayo Clinic to treat his lungs on his doctor's recommendation. He said he expected to be released "in the coming days".

Dayton said he was in constant contact with the commissioners and staff.

The Democratic governor has not been seen in public since his first operation on October 12. His office did not immediately answer questions asking for more details about his health.

The two Dayton mandates were marked by recurring health problems. He had previously undergone three similar back surgeries and a separate procedure to repair a torn hip muscle.

Last year, Dayton had revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a day after his collapse during his State of the State address. Dayton has been operated on and is now in remission.

Dayton did not ask for a third term. He will leave office on January 8th.
