In the United States, the highest suicide rate among all occupations was arts, design, recreation, sports and media, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The study relies on information about 22,000 people who died by suicide in 17 states between 2012 and 2015. It found that librarians and teachers had the lowest suicide rates in terms of their profession. .
Overall, the suicide rate in the United States continues to climb in almost all states, increasing year-over-year since 1999, including among teens. In the study released Thursday by the CDC, researchers noted that rates increased the most between 2012 and 2015 for men working in the category of arts, media and sports. The highest rates were observed among women working in meal preparation and service.
CDC researchers note that many factors contribute to suicide rates, particularly in some occupations. For example, job insecurity and instability can contribute to the onset of mental health problems that can lead to or exacerbate existing risk factors for self-harm and suicide. A better understanding of these factors can improve prevention, especially in the workplace.
