A DEA officer and DEA state soldier opened fire on a suspect during a car stop on the West Side Highway on Thursday while trying to overthrow the officers.
Officers fired two shots at the 31-year-old suspect around 12 noon on 12th Avenue and 46th Street West – near the Museum of the Sea, Air and Space – during the attempt to stop the driver in a mill in the Bronx, officials said.
The suspect, who was not beaten, tried to hit the agents with his Jeep Cherokee before turning around and hitting other cars in an attempt to escape, authorities said. .
"While the officers were trying to stop the car, the lives of the officers and bystanders were threatened and shots were fired," said DEA spokeswoman Erin Mulvey. "[The] the pursuit continued. "
At a press conference on the scene, the DEA Special Agent, Timothy Foley, said, "The accused was trying to evade the guard of the Task Force member. During that time, he created a risk to the safety of others. "
The suspect, who was alone in the car, went to 262nd Street and Broadway, near the Westchester County line, where he was assembled without incident, according to the authorities.
"Other arrests are on hold," Mulvey said.
According to repressive sources, three other people were dismantled as a result of the long-term investigation into the heroin operation.
The task force agents had initially placed the suspect in the Bronx and had followed him on the West Side Highway.
"This was a task force investigation into a large-scale heroin operation in the Bronx," Mulvey added.
The incident caused the temporary closure of the West Side Highway between West 42nd Street and West 56th Street.
Officials said no one was injured during the incident.
A witness who was working in a parking lot at the corner of West 46th Street said: "I heard cars break, scream … And then I heard" bang, bang "… it was at least two strokes of fire".
