The 2009 swine flu pandemic in Australia killed 191 people, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

The actual number of deaths is probably much higher, the figure 191 does not include suspected cases.

In December 2009, 37,537 cases of the H1N1 virus were recorded in Australia.

The first case was recorded on May 9, 2009, in a 33-year-old woman who arrived from Los Angeles in Brisbane.

On June 19, 2009, the first confirmed swine flu death was a 26-year-old Aboriginal man from Western Australia.

A large-scale vaccination effort against the disease began on September 28, 2009

Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales had the highest number of cases, with 11,528, 8,944 and 5,078 respectively

In August 2010, the World Health Organization declared that swine flu had entered the post-pandemic period.

The virus takes its name from "swine flu" because it is a respiratory disease of pigs, caused by influenza A viruses, most commonly the H1N1 subtype.
