One is when a child draws on the walls, or a teenager speaks back. The other is sexual abuse. They are not even in the same classification area. Writing the alleged actions of Spacey as misconduct is the same excuse that "boys will be boys". No, Spacey should be held responsible for his actions, which deserve more than a slap.
Dench's lyrics are really daunting, but not totally surprising if you're looking for his position on feminism. Although she expressed her support for Harvey Weinstein's victims, she also stated that she "would not be called a feminist at all. I do not know what a feminist is. I think women have a say. She also talked about the #MeToo movement on the red carpet for Murder at the Orient Express, saying, "It's outrageous, but it's very difficult when many of those involved are good friends. Dench seems to be suitable for movement only if it does not affect those she knows personally. One must expect a conflict – after all, none of us will admit that one of our friends could be a monster – but his words are deeply harmful to the survivors. The decision to remove Spacey from his movies and TV shows means that Hollywood was really trying to do something right and punish Spacey for his actions. Preventing it from continuing to work on projects was also an attempt to make the sets safer for the people involved, because having a so-called predator on the set is downright dangerous.
We can not exclude all those who have committed wrongs since history, but we can advance this part of their story. "All he's done" is a sexual assault; it's something he should suffer the consequences. Dench has shown that his care of the victims extends only to those who do not accuse his friends, which is a deeply detrimental attitude to hold. It's disappointing when someone reveals that these are the views they have. Dench might not know what a feminist is, but the rest of us needs feminism and moves like #MeToo and #TimesUp. Let's hope she learns from that and understands where the Spacey accusers come from. If not, then perhaps she will keep her views deeply harmful to herself and will not shame the accusers to show up or the studios for doing what is right.
