A teenager from Volusia County is accused of strangling his mother and then burying her body under a home in a DeBary church, deputies said.
According to officials from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Gregory Ramos, 15, confessed to killing Gail Cleavenger, 46, by strangling her at the family's home on the road to Alicante on Thursday night.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the murder seemed to stem from a dispute between the boy and his mother on Thursday night.
"It was methodical – I mean his own words, it took thirty minutes to kill his mother," said Sheriff Mike Chitwood.
MPs said that he then used a wheelbarrow to load it into his van and buried it under a fire at the River City Church on East Highbanks Road on Friday morning.
Friends and neighbors knew Cleavenger as a caring wife, a mother and a friend.
"I just started crying, you know, I can not imagine receiving this call, her husband …," said Lynn Hackett. "I will miss her, and I think it's a terrible tragedy."
Ramos told the detectives that he had used two friends to organize a robbery scene at the family's home.
The two friends, who are also minors, are in detention and face charges, said a deputy.
Ramos reported the robbery to deputies on Friday afternoon and said his mother was missing and that his van was still running in the alley.
MPs then confessed to the murder of his mother and involved his friends.
These same friends helped the detectives travel to the home where Cleavenger's body was found early Saturday morning. Officials said the home was a place where the three friends met often.
"They would stay in front of this home, so it was a very famous place for them, a place where they felt comfortable coming," Chitwood said. "It's heartbreaking to sit with the family because the family has lost everything."
MEPs said they had recovered items removed from the house during the burglary.
Chitwood said that the teenager at the center of the case was one of the least sad accused killers that he had ever seen during his career in the application of the law.
"It was a soulless individual who thought he was the smartest person in the room," said Chitwood. "He also told us that he deserved a Grammy for his performance with the 911 call."
"The business we have been working on tonight is one of the most troubling and saddening of my career. I feel that this is something we will be hearing about for years. All of our hearts are breaking for this family, "Chitwood said early Saturday.
