(KTIV) – Fourth Congressional congressional candidate J.D. Scholten has announced that he is filing a complaint with the House Ethics Committee against his opponent, Republican Representative Steve King.

In his letter to the Ethics Committee, Scholten says he is disturbed by what he calls "abusing taxpayers' money".

Letter from J.D. Scholten to OCE

Scholten cites an article from the information website "The Intercept" in his allegation.

An article on this site, released on Wednesday, indicates that King spent more than $ 18,000 on food and beverages from his member representation allowance at a restaurant called Capitol Hill Club.

Scholten also quoted an article by Buzzfeed saying that nearly $ 24,000 was spent on a trip to Russia funded by the Small Business Committee.

We contacted Representative Steve King's campaign for an answer.

King campaign chairman Jeff King responded with a statement that reads as follows:

The Conservative Opportunity Society (COS), founded by Newt Gingrich in 1983 and led for 14 years by Congressman Steve King, Is one of the most important official forums for promoting conservative ideas at Capitol Hill. Notable speakers include Vice President Dick Cheney, Judge Antonin Scalia, President Paul Ryan, President Newt Gingrich, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and National Security Advisor John Bolton. COS activities are regularly reviewed and approved prior to payment by the House Administration Committee. COS is an official caucus approved by the House and the expenses are not intended for lobbyists and alcohol. They go to bacon and eggs, oatmeal and coffee. Any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate and deliberately misleading. "
