DeeJay Dallas arrived in Coral Gables two years ago as a four-star athlete, one of the jewels in Miami's 2017 recruiting class.
Since, the sophomore has been one of Miami's go-to players, on and off the field, and Friday night at Boston College was no different.
The Hurricanes are called on the back of the first half of the world.
Dallas notched a 53-yard kickoff return – the Hurricanes' longest return of the season – in the first quarter that eventually led to Miami's first touchdown of the night, a 13-yard scoring pass from quarterback Malik Rosier to veteran Darrell Langham.
Later in the first half, with the Hurricanes trailing 17-7, Dallas took a deep snap in Boston College territory and scored on a 10-yard run.
But in the end, his efforts were not enough, with the Hurricanes falling 27-14. Root touched a kickoff deep inside Boston College territory.
"Just giving my all for the team. That's what I do every day, just give my all for the team, "Dallas said.
Quarterback watch
After redshirt freshman quarterback N'Kosi Perry started Miami's games against North Carolina, Hurricanes coach Mark Richt opted to give senior redshirt Malik Rosier the start at Boston College, counting on the veteran's experience at the Hurricanes' second straight road game.
Rosier, who has been maligned by Hurricanes fans after he struggled during Miami's three-game slide last season and this year's loss to LSU, finished the game 19-of-36 for 150 yards with two interceptions. He also rushed 14 times for 71 yards and was sacked three times.
BC's Dillon Returns
After missing Boston College's past two games because of ankle injury, running back AJ Dillon – the preseason ACC Player of the Year – returned to the Eagles' lineup Friday and made his presence felt early.
Dillon broke free for a 25-yard win on Boston College's first offensive play of the night, and finished the night with 32 carries for 149 yards with a touchdown.
Hurricanes change starting offensive line … again
Miami's offensive line had some struggles in the Hurricanes' 16-13 loss at Virginia two weeks ago, and on Friday, offensive line coach Stacy Searles tried to mix things up.
On this night, Tyree St. Louis made his seventh start at left tackle, Jahair Jones returned to the starting right guard for the first time since the Toledo game, Hayden Mahoney made his seventh start at center, Navaughn Donaldson made his second right hand at right guard and freshman DJ Scaife made his second straight start at right tackle.
It was, for Miami, the fourth different starting combination this season.
The Hurricanes gave up three sacks in Friday's Hurricanes turned the ball over.
"Well, there were some moments that were rough on DJ. One time in particular where the guy ran right around him and everybody saw it and the quarterback got hit. That's just one play, "Richt said. Familiar faces
While most of the Boston College roster hails from the northeast, the Eagles recruit South Florida and a pair of players from Broward County.
Eagles kicker Danny Longman, who handled kickoffs for Boston College early, played at Chaminade-Madonna, while defensive end Wyatt Ray, who played in the first quarter, played at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Scouting the Hurricanes and Eagles
Former Miami linebacker Dan Morgan, who is now with the Buffalo Bills, was among several NFL scouts working on Friday's game at Alumni Stadium.
Also in attendance were Broncos scouts, Buccaneers, 49ers, Panthers, Giants, Patriots, Lions, Eagles and Jets.
