DOVER, Del. – A Delaware health official said he had confirmed another human case of West Nile virus, marking the fifth case this year.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports that this case involving a 57-year-old man from New Castle County has the highest number of confirmed cases in Delaware since 2015.
Officials say the man's case is still waiting for confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Officials confirmed the first case of this year's delawarien virus in early August.
West Nile is carried by mosquitoes and can lead to serious illness and even death. There is no human vaccine against the virus. Many people who are infected never have symptoms, including rashes and swollen lymph nodes.
Officials advise to remove stagnant water and wear an insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites.
