CAP CANAVERAL, Fla. – A rocket known to have launched satellites and other spacecraft into the sky over the last three decades joins a kind of historic rocket hall of fame.
Authorities announced on Saturday that the Delta 2 rocket would join the Rocket Garden at NASA's Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The "Garden" includes rockets used to launch Alan Shepard's first US space flight, as well as the launch of the mission to the Skylab space station and the first Soviet joint space flight.
The Delta 2 rocket was removed on Saturday after the launch of a NASA satellite designed to accurately measure changes in the Earth's ice caps.
The first Delta 2 was launched in 1989.
In addition to satellites, the rocket has launched GPS orbiters and interplanetary missions, including the twin Mars Spirit and Opportunity.
