A Delta Airlines flight landed on Friday morning in Oklahoma City, after a passenger attacked a flight attendant, police said.

Officers responded just before 2 pm to a report of an impending emergency landing at Will Rogers World Airport. Delta Flight 2603, which was heading from Salt Lake City to Orlando, had called for an emergency landing at the OKC airport due to a violent and unruly passenger.

The passenger, 28-year-old Derek Edward Maas, from Utah, had been detained, but police said the captain had decided that he needed to be removed from the flight to ensure the safety of the passengers and of the crew.

The officers said that Maas was very unstable on his feet, had red and watery eyes and lost balance when he went to the officer. Police said that Maas had a strong smell of alcohol in his breath.

The crew members told police that in the beginning, Maas appeared intoxicated, but they did not think it was dangerous. After being served two alcoholic drinks, Maas asked for more and a flight attendant refused. It was at this point that Maas verbally abused a flight attendant and "hit the head" to another.

With the help of several other passengers, the flight attendants managed to master Maas and master it.

Police said during his imprisonment that Maas admitted to having drunk alcoholic beverages before boarding the plane.

Maas was assigned to the Oklahoma County Jail for public drunkenness complaint.

Delta Airlines officials issued the following statement,

"Delta applauds the quick action and professionalism of Delta's 2603 flight crew operating from Salt Lake City, Orlando to Oklahoma City after a client became unruly and violent on board. The crew withheld the client and the flight was respected by law enforcement in Oklahoma City, where he was abducted and taken into custody. The flight continued to Orlando, arriving two hours away.
