Demetrious Johnson responds to rumors, removes 'UFC' from Twitter handle

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, is making some moves in the wake of "trade" rumors that he's defecting to ONE Championship in Singapore for welterweight veteran Ben Askren.

That includes changing his Twitter handle from "Mighty Mouse UFC" to just "Mighty Mouse," an update that would suggest he's tired of promoting "mistreatment and bullying" after more than six years atop the 125-pound throne.

Johnson wrote on social media, along with the #newadventure hashtag, "Just so everyone knows, I am pumped and excited for the future, stay tuned! "Shout out to Ariel Helwani for the new Twitter handle and the badge back."

Johnson set the UFC record for most consecutive title defenses, formerly held by ex-middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, until a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo at UFC 227 snapped the streak last August.

"Mighty Mouse" (27-3-1) is a subject that has never been able to move the pay-per-view (PPV) needle, despite its stranglehold on the pound-for-pound rankings, and frequently commented on by UFC President Dana White, among others.

While his move to the championship, it sounds like the best-selling champion of the world. – to complement his 170-pound strap in Bellator MMA – is already crowning himself UFC champion.

Have a look:

He's certainly wasted no time in making welterweight enemies.

Askren retired from mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2017, but continued to chase George St-Pierre, UFC welterweight champion at some point in 2019 in the French-Canadian backyard of Montreal.

In light of recent events, that does not sound so crazy after all …
