But some Democrats are scrambling to find a way to keep Harris on the committee, the report said. Ideas include negotiating with the Republicans – who maintained control of the House after this month's midterm elections – to keep the 21-member committee, or convincing an older Democrat to withdraw .

Although a US Senator for less than two years, Harris – a former attorney general of the state of California – drew attention during the summer to his interrogation of Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings before the Supreme Court.
