WDemocrat Harley Rouda leads acting representative Dana Rohrabacher of the R-Calif. In a race centered on the support of his 30-year-old president to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Rouda had obtained 91,750 votes and Rohrabacher 89,068. It is possible that postal ballots, counted ballots or a recount could make Rohrabacher the final winner, a gap of 2,682 votes would be extremely difficult fill.
Rouda won 50.7% of the vote against 49.3% for Rohrabacher. Rohrabacher's allegiance to President Trump and a more favorable foreign policy to Russia seemed to dampen his support among the residents of the rich coastal district of Orange County. Rohrabacher stressed the need to work with Russia in the fight against terrorism and other issues. Rohrabacher has also rallied to President Trump to restrict immigration.
Rohrabacher's defeat by Rouda marked a wider shift in favor of Democratic candidates in the once-Republican stronghold of Orange County. House Democrats got at least one more seat in suburban county. Rouda's victory helped Democrats in the House win the majority and help reshape the Orange County Democrats' map.
Rohrabacher was first elected in 1988, but his political vulnerability became evident after Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won by two points in 2016. The former mayor of the city, Michael Bloomberg, has spent a lot of time supporting Rouda, responsible for the real estate section of the race.
