Kinshasa (AFP) – The Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed the lives of 164 people, according to health authorities.
In mid-October, Congolese authorities reported being confronted with a "second wave" of epidemic centered on Beni, a town in North Kivu located near the border with Uganda.
The epicenter had previously been concentrated on Mangina, a town about 20 kilometers from Beni.
In total, 257 cases have been recorded in the region, including 222 confirmed and 35 probable, since the beginning of the epidemic in early August, the Congolese Ministry of Health said in a bulletin dated Friday.

The second wave of the deadly virus has been attributed to community resistance to measures already taken to control the disease.
On Thursday, around 1,000 students marched through the streets of Beni to launch a campaign to fight the Ebola virus.
Since the launch of the vaccination program on August 8, more than 22,000 people have been safe, including about 11,000 in Beni, announced the Ministry of Health.
An Ebola treatment center in the city now has more than 60 beds, he added.
The last outbreak is the 10th in DR Congo since the detection of the Ebola virus in 1976.
