Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, a Maryland politician for more than 50 years, easily won his party's nomination Tuesday for a third term in the Senate. Republican Tony Campbell, a lecturer at Towson University and former Army Chaplain, came out of a crowded primary for the GOP nod nodding.

Cardin celebrated his victory at a reception in Baltimore.
"I am very happy not only with the result of the vote I received, but also with the fact that I go to the polls and see the reaction of the voters," he said. "What they want me to do is stand up for American values, but they also want us to do things."
Campbell taught political science and analysis of elections.
"I teach politics and I did it well," said Campbell Tuesday night. "It has never been expected that career politicians will be in office for 50 years."
He said that he was running in part to combat the "one size fits all" approach of federal programs. He said that he would focus on education and "keep America safe until immigration".

Cardin replied that many contenders themselves have skipped campaign events.
