ISLAMABAD – The release of a Christian in Pakistan, who had been acquitted after being sentenced to death for blasphemy, would have been delayed after the failure of negotiations between the government and the Islamists who wanted the public hanging.
Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the 2010 sentence against Asia Bibi for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
Since then, Islamists have blocked highways to put pressure on the government so that it stops releasing it from an undisclosed detention center.
On Friday, Pakistan shut down schools and colleges after Khadim Hussain Rizvi, leader of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik party, announced the failure of his talks with the government.
He asked his supporters to continue sitting down while the authorities had summoned paramilitary troops to restore order.
