CRÊME PHILADELPHIA – The Eagles' injury season was also touched on Tuesday as starting defender Derek Barnett needed a shoulder operation to finish his season.
Barnett is injured in the shoulder during the fourth week against the Tennessee Titans. He missed the game of the fifth week against the Minnesota Vikings, but returned to action the next two weeks.
Now that Barnett would be away for the season, the Eagles have more than four healthy defense tips. Starter Brandon Graham and veterans Chris Long and Michael Bennett will handle most of the outdoor shots. Rookie defenseman Josh Sweat could also see his expanded role.
The question for the Eagles will exert constant pressure on the opposing quarters. While Graham, Long and Bennett had their moments, Barnett was probably the best assailant of the team's edge when he was healthy. Sweat is still an unknown at the position.
Here are nine possible solutions to the problem of defensive end-depth of the Eagles:
1. Steven Means
Current team: Atlanta Falcons
Season statistics: 2 tackles
Why this makes sense: Means played for the Eagles for three seasons before being released by the team in the September final cups. Strong presence in the locker room and a good understanding of the defense, Means could immediately intervene and contribute. Means does not spend much time in Atlanta, so maybe they would suggest it for a conditional seventh round pick.
2. Bruce Irvin
Current team: Oakland Raiders
Season statistics: 6 tackles, 3 sacks and a forced fumble
Why this makes sense: The Raiders seem to be a ship in distress ready for a garage sale "Everything must go". The Eagles could offer a last-minute choice for aging aging and add it to the spin. Irvin would be a step forward from the current rotation and he has experience in a broad front.
3. Jerry Hughes
Current team: Buffalo Bills
Season statistics: 22 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles
Why this makes sense: The bills are in free fall and should probably start to focus on the future. Hughes has a salary of $ 6.35 million this season and a double salary next year. The Eagles could bring Hughes under the hat. At 30, he could take the place of Long or Bennett in the rotation next season. The Eagles could offer a mid-term choice for the best defense.
