OAKLAND – Derek Carr rushed for 303 yards on Monday night. He completed 72% of his passes with 7.3 yards per attempt.
This line of statistics suggests that the quarterback of the Raiders had a good night and that the offensive was in buzz.
Not this time, not in a 33-13 loss to the Rams at the Oakland Coliseum.
"I thought he had done some good things tonight, but there are some critical mistakes that we need to eliminate," said Raiders coach Jon Gruden. "He knows it. I know it. We all know that. "
A total of three interceptions were the critical errors mentioned by Gruden, and they all caused problems. Carr's first appearance was in the end zone as the Raiders drove to score. The second looked awful and came out of Carr's hand when he tried to go back and avoid throwing it. The last was a choice of six by Marcus Peters, when Carr and Jared Cook were not on the same page.
The Rams scored 13 points on Carr's turnovers. The first interception took points on the board because the Raiders were at least at hand.
Carr has had perfect passes on a number of occasions, but the turnovers have caused problems for the Raiders. The fifth-year pro knows that these mistakes can not happen.
"We have corrections to make," said Carr. "You see that the teams have errors of week 1, no matter how much you play a certain role. By going from the front, we will get better. I will take better care of the ball and make better shots and decisions. We will be a good team. "
Gruden and Carr communicated well Monday night, with a relatively smooth process of retransmitting the pieces to Carr with enough time to allow him to make the proper checks. These mechanics went well.
This is not the case for Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson. Carr said both teams were often double-teamed, often leaving tight back Jared Cook in the middle of the field. He finished with nine catches for 180 yards.
Nelson and Cooper, however, combined four catches and 32 yards. That will not reduce it and the Raiders' attack eventually lost momentum as the night progressed.
"They wanted to get both out," said Carr. "Not only did they have Peters and Talib on these guys, but they doubled them with security. They created a box to contain them. That's why Jared had a big game. We had no problem seeing what they were doing. If a cover has a certain appearance, we have other options.
Carr knows that he has to be better for the Raiders to succeed. He is their most important player, especially now that the defense continues without Khalil Mack. Three reversals leading to Rams' points hurt the Raiders, although that was not the only problem. They were systematically penalized in the first half, including four calls and three false starts.
The Raiders had good times, especially in the first half. But they lost momentum in the second and these major mistakes will be the focus of a dull offensive performance.
