The Des Moines Pack Packing Co.'s meat packing plant closed down just before its 150th anniversary in business
The small family business closed on Friday, reported the Des Moines Register . Amend Packing was one of the oldest businesses in the city, having processed beef for farmers and customers in central Iowa since 1869, supporting five generations of the Amend family in Des Moines [19659003]. Wiese said that it is an emotional decision to close the factory that her great-grandfather founded and where she worked for 40 years. also worked at the factory for many years.
"It was a privilege to work with my sons," said Amend Wiese. "They were the fifth generation to work here."
Most of the 200 processors in Iowa are small operations, said Ken Richmann, co-executive director of the Iowa Meat Processors Association. Small businesses usually consist of a husband and a wife, while larger ones employ 15 to 18 people.
"And many of them could use the help," he said. "Because of this, they only accept the business they can handle."
Amend Packing found a niche serving small producers throughout the state. At one time, Amend Packing treated 200 cattle per week, but it was down to about 15 or 20 per week
Weise told the Registry in 2013 that his cutting techniques had been perfected during years of daily butchery
