A few hours before winning a ninth term in Congress, Republican Iowa Steve King prevented the state's largest newspaper, the Des Moines Register, from covering its event on election night, calling the newspaper " leftist propaganda media ".

The editorial board of the register endorsed Scholten's advice: "It's obvious to all Iowan who has fallen in love with King's growing obsession with eight mandates to be a cultural provocateur. … we approve [Scholten] not only as an antidote to King's virulent xenophobia, but also as a promising new leader. "
King is increasingly criticized for his incendiary rhetoric about race and immigration, as well as what critics say is his adherence to white nationalism. He was favored to be re-elected, although his recent actions – including his support for a white nationalist candidate for the post of Mayor of Toronto and his meeting with members of an Austrian far-right party with historical links with Nazism – earned him reproaches from the Anti-Defamation League, the chairman of the National Committee of Republican Congress (NRCC) and others.
On Monday, King again blinked when he said at an election event that he was hoping that Supreme Court justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor "would withdraw to Cuba."
