Construction workers made a terrible discovery on Friday night as they strove to turn a funeral home into a community center: the bodies of 11 children hidden in the ceiling.
WDIV, a local affiliate of NBC, said the Cantrell funeral home, located on the east side of the city, was shut down in April by state inspectors who had found several violations, including rotting remains, bodies poorly stored and unsanitary conditions. The inspectors presented themselves by surprise and were first refused entry; Once inside, they found more than minor violations. The bodies of 2017 had been kept in a non-refrigerated garage. Other embalmed bodies poorly stored for months were covered with mold. The inspectors also alleged that the owners misused the funds and suspended the funeral home license.
In an interview in April, the owner of the house, Raymond Cantrell, told Fox 2 Detroit that he had taken over the funeral home in 2017 and that, by storing the corpses, he was rendering "a favor to accommodate" clients who could not pay burials immediately.
"If I had them at the funeral home, then my funeral home would not smell fresh," Cantrell told Fox. "So, yes, they are embalmed and maintained [and] we put them in the garage. "
