A detroit cop was fired Monday after posting a photo on Snapchat with a viral racist caption.

Sean Bostwick, who worked in the 12th Ward, posted a picture of him on Snapchat with the caption: "Another night in Rangel (sic), these zoo animals," before starting his Sunday shift. Bostwick misspelled the word "wrangle".

The photo spread after John Bennett, a former Detroit police officer, posted it on his Facebook, writing: "This is a newly appointed Detroit police officer. The legend speaks of itself.

Detroit Chief of Police James Craig said he met with Mr. Bostwick on Monday and decided to fire him during the discussion.

"He expressed remorse, but I certainly told him very firmly that it had stained not only our department, but the entire organization," said Craig at a press conference Monday. "It's out of our payroll force tomorrow morning."

After being hired in June 2017, Mr Bostwick was expelled from the police academy for two months. Mr. Bostwick was still a probation officer when he posted the photo, Craig said. The commander supervising his training felt that he needed more time in his fieldwork. Bostwick being on probation has accelerated his dismissal, according to Craig.
