Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg's back injury puts an end to his hockey career, Executive Director Ken Holland said Friday.
Zetterberg, 37, was hoping to play again. Last month, he described a deterioration in fitness that included nerve pain in the legs and disc problems.
Holland said Zetterberg would be placed on a long-term injury reserve.
Zetterberg has three years left on his contract, with an annual cap of $ 6.083 million. Since he's placed on a long-term injury reserve, the Red Wings will benefit from significant heading relief.
Zetterberg has played every 82 games in the past three seasons. He had 11 goals and 45 assists in 2017-18 while the Red Wings missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.
The All-Star double won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2008 while Detroit won the Stanley Cup. In 2015, he received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which recognizes a player's leadership and humanitarian efforts.
