Tommy DeVito played the role of the Syracuse superhero (5-2, 2-2) by winning an unlikely 40-37 victory over North Carolina (1-5, 1-3) in overtime.
DeVito replaced Eric Dungey at the end of the fourth quarter. Hoping to be lost to the Orange, he hit Nykeim Johnson on a 42-yard pass to tie at 27 with a score of 1:39. The match went on and DeVito hit Jamal Custis 25 yards to give Syracuse an early lead. The Tar Heels responded with a quick score to send the game to a second extra time.
After the Syracuse defense gave UNC a 49-yard goal in the second overtime, DeVito hit Ravian Pierce four yards for the goal. The rookie quarterback finished 11-19 for 181 yards and three touchdowns with an interception.
The game began spree for Syracuse, who let North Carolina down on the ground for a touchdown. The attack seemed rusty after the start, with only 57 yards in the first quarter. While the defense of the poorly designed race was actually solid, the Tar Heels were able to move the ball into the air. At the end of the second period, however, Syracuse began.
A game consisting of five teams and 32 yards, limited by a touch of Chris Elmore, was set up by an exceptional team. Sterling Hofrichter kicked a deflated kick and Shy Cullen had a great tackle that allowed North Carolina to return to a 16-yard line. After a quick three and a half goals, the Tar Heels conceded a punt that allowed Orange to position himself perfectly on the field, on a 32-yard line.
This attack gave Syracuse their first lead at 10-7. They took a 13-7 lead in the locker room and ignited. A 68-yard pass from Dungey to Jamal Custis allowed the senior quarterback's teammate to score. The advance of 20-7 year olds, however, would be short-lived. Less than four minutes later, North Carolina scored a touchdown on a 12-yard run by Antonio Williams to cut the lead to six.
Less than five minutes later, Dazz Newsome returned a 76-yard field goal to give the advantage to North Carolina. The Syracuse offense continued to struggle after this defeat, with three defeats on three of its next four properties. They appeared to have recovered strength early in the fourth quarter when Andre Cisco forced a fumble recovered by Ryan Guthrie.
The Orange started to walk and plunged the ball into the depths of North Carolina with a first try. Moe Neal received the ball and ran towards the center with a big hole. He stumbled on the ground and the ball escaped at the end of the race. He was examined and determined as a fumble, which North Carolina recovered.
The Tar Heels added an investment to score seven points, and the Syracuse offense continued to weaken. Quarterback Eric Dungey missed several shots to open receivers who blocked orders or left points on the field. He was also fired four times in the afternoon. He finished 17-33 for 225 yards. He also ran for 42 yards and a score.
After a good start for the Syracuse defense, which limited North Carolina to just 22 rushing yards in the first half, the Tar Heels picked up things in the second half to finish with over 150 yards.
Syracuse is now 5-2 (2-2) on the season and a match of the eligibility of the bowl. They will face number 15 of the NC State in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, October 27th.
