Type 1 diabetes inhibits the body's ability to produce insulin, which is needed to transfer glucose from the bloodstream to the body's cells. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 1.25 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes, with approximately 40,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Insulin therapy can help patients manage their condition.
The family said it planned to donate Sophia's organs, with services planned for the weekend.
