According to one study, people can lose 10 times more weight simply by changing the way they think. The researchers found that just imagining that you were thinner can help you achieve your weight loss goals.
Scientists at the University of Portsmouth found that dieters using functional imaging training (FIT) had lost a 1st and 9 cm of their height after a year on average.
In contrast, patients who participated in "motivational interviews" – encouraged by a counselor to get rid of their fat – lost only 0.1 kilo and 0.24 cm in size.
All patients were dieting or exercising regularly – two known factors that could further increase weight loss efforts.
FIT implies that people visualize what they feel, smell, look and enjoy as they are thinner.
The researchers analyzed 141 overweight volunteers; defined as having a BMI of at least 25.
Fifty-nine of the participants received an ITF, while the other 55 had "Motivational Interviewing" (MI).
Speaking of FIT, the lead author, Dr. Linda Solbrig, said, "We started by guiding people to exercise on a lemon. We asked them to imagine seeing them, touching them, squeezing them, sucking them accidentally into their eyes, to emphasize how emotional and stifling the images of physical sensations are. From there, we can encourage them to imagine and adhere fully to their own goals. Not just "imagine how good it would be to lose weight" but, for example, "would losing weight allow you to do what you can not do now?" What would it look like, sound and smell? And encourage them to use all their senses. "
MI involved participants being informed about why they wanted to lose weight.
All participants had two sessions, the first one hour face-to-face and the second 45 minutes on the phone.
"Call back" calls of up to 15 minutes were made every two weeks for three months, then every four weeks until six months after the start of the study.
Weight and waist circumference were measured at baseline and at 6 and 12 months. After six months, those receiving FIT lost 0.6 kg of stone and 7 cm less at the waist.
But IM participants had still lost only 0.1 stone and had even gained 0.24 cm in waist circumference for six months.
All participants reported a better quality of life after six months, but the FIT group more.
The findings were published in the International Journal of Obesity.
"Most people agree that to lose weight, you have to eat less and exercise more, but in many cases, people simply are not motivated enough to follow this advice. – as far as they can agree with this advice, "said Dr. Linda Solbrig. .
"FIT intervenes with the main purpose of encouraging a person to imagine what the change might look like, how it could be achieved and maintained, even when problems arise. It is fantastic that people lost a lot more weight with this intervention, because unlike most studies, it did not provide advice on diet / physical activity or education. People were completely free in their choices and supported in what they wanted to do, and not what a prescribed diet.
FIT is supposed to be more effective than MI because it stimulates many different senses. This allows dieters to visualize what would be a weight loss, which could motivate them to achieve their goal.
