Powell told President Donald Trump by phone that she was honored to be considered, but that she was considering staying at Goldman Sachs, the source told Reuters.

Trump had spoken to Powell about this post since Haley announced this week his intention to resign. Powell had previously served Trump White House as an Assistant National Security Advisor.

In the White House, there was some resistance to Powell's return, and a senior administration official has already told Reuters that it was no longer under review.

Trump said Wednesday that he had several candidates for the post of United States Representative to the United Nations to succeed Haley, who announced his resignation Tuesday.
