Less than a week after Maryland dismissed his football coach, Michael "Dino" Tomlin of the Shady Side Academy announced on Tuesday his commitment to the Terrapins.
Tomlin revealed his decision on Twitter.
"It was a combination of academics and an athlete," said Shady Side coach Chuck DiNardo. "He likes the idea of playing on the big stage of the Big 10 and he felt very comfortable in their business school."
Tomlin could not be reached. He joined a program that recently sacked coach DJ Durkin and promoted Matt Canada to the position of interim head coach.
"I think (the engagement) said that he felt very comfortable with how their sports department handled this whole situation," DiNardo said.
Tomlin, son of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, is one of the best receivers of WPIAL. The elder held more than a dozen offers from Division 1. His list included FBS Pitt, Army, Texas-San Antonio and Toledo schools, as well as Duquesne, Robert Morris, Albany, Columbia , Dartmouth, Fordham, Holy Cross, Howard, William & Mary and Yale.
Maryland offered him at the end of August.
Tomlin (6-0, 170) has scored 18 touchdowns this season for Shady Side Academy (10-0), WPIAL's top-seeded class 2 contender. It also has 644 yards on 18 receptions.
He won the jumping title last spring.
