Discussions between CervicalCheck and screening laboratories have reached a "critical stage," an HSE spokeswoman said.
United States-owned laboratories require the state to take responsibility for legal matters resulting from false negative smear test results that have been read out of negligence.
The extension of their service from October, when their contracts will end, is part of an agreement.
