Disney darkens Princess Tiana in Ralph Wreck-It's sequel after complaints

Disney went back to the drawing board after complaints that the skin of the black Disney Princess Tiana had been lightened in teasers for "Ralph Breaks The Internet".

After the outcry, the studio darkened her skin and widened her nose, so that she looks more like the animated character released in 2009 in "The Princess and the Frog," reported The Wall Street Journal last week.

Last August, fans noticed that, in a scene with other Disney princesses in the sequel to "Wreck-It Ralph," Tiana's traits seemed more eurocentric than in previous promos. Some have accused Disney of whitewashing the character.

As the backlash progressed, Disney's animators met with Anika Noni Rose, who played Tiana's voice, and the black rights group Color of Change. The effort provoked substantial changes in Tiana's appearance as the film opened on Nov. 21.

Color of Change hailed Disney's agreement to make Tiana a "victory" for the black community.

In a statement (by the Journal), Color of Change wrote:

Disney's decision to revamp Princess Tiana's image as a black princess with fleshy lips, dark skin and black hair, shamelessly in Wreck-It Ralph 2 is a win for Color Of members Change and black audiences who want to see the variety of shades, shapes and sizes of black characters accurately represented in the arts.

And here is Tiana who looks a lot like the Tiana that fans know and love from the latest trailer of "Ralph Breaks The Internet".
