It's almost the most spooky time of the year: Halloween – the night when the dead are free to roam the earth. But what is it that scares you the most? Zombies? Witches? Vampires? What about the debilitating and sometimes fatal bacteria, salmonella ?!
While it's cute to dress your human babies like Halloween chicks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns chicken owners not to put costumes on their live poultry for the holidays. This is because a particularly potent strain of salmonella goes around this year.
According to ABC News, at least 92 people in 29 states have been infected with a multi-drug resistant salmonella strain after coming in contact with raw chicken products. Although no deaths have been reported yet, 21 patients have been hospitalized.
The CDC issued a warning about handling live chickens because they could carry Salmonella bacteria on their bodies. The CDC encourages chicken handlers to always wash their hands and not to let live poultry live inside the house, especially when you keep food and drink.
As entertaining as it may be, do not dress your chicken like Julia Roberts in a chick movie, or like the cruel leader Attila the Hen, and certainly not like a spooky one.
