The anticipation of Doctor Who, Season 11, Episode 1, was similar to the one you get before jumping off a plane for the first time. Whether it is good or not, you will never be able to say that you have never taken that risk.
Personally, I think this jump has gone well. Very very good.

Whenever The Doctor regenerates, we can expect a refresh of the show, the character and even the TARDIS. Historically, every doctor has brought his own version of the sonic screwdriver, his own wardrobe and his favorite snacks menu.
Introducing the first female version of The Doctor, they have rewritten even these iconic accessories. The thirteenth doctor momentarily lost his TARDIS (which is nothing new since the TARDIS of the third doctor was broken for the duration of his stay) AND his screwdriver.
She spends all the adventure in the remnants of Twelve's outfit until Yaz explains to her that she really needs a change. And, for what I must believe, one must first be Whovian (correct me if I am wrong), The Doctor SHOPS for his outfit.
Oh, please, please, please, please, please, do not make a sexist speech. of the FFD (the first female doctor) to shop. No TARDIS, no endless wardrobe supply. It's really a no-brainer.
The outfit itself is probably worthy of praise, notice.
Meanwhile, the sonic screwdriver is not really a commercial product so when she realizes that she is good at building things, she goes to work to make one out of nothing. It is D.I.Y. on an EPIC scale, for sure.
The montage of the creation of a 100% Sheffield product, which is rather a "sonic Swiss Army Knife" (but without the knife) is a series of gags at the sight wonderfully whimsical. I laugh loudly at the action of the hammer in which she puts herself.

The result is a sonic that throws sparks (and bubbles?) Unexpected but the doctor is convinced that it will do the job. A bit of a metaphor for the new season, maybe?
It's exciting. No, not exciting. What is it I mean? Worrying.
The doctor
Now, in addition to introducing a new Doctor, the first of a season after a regeneration of Who-Verse means something new to the role of Companion. Whether it's a new character or simply a new situation for former Companions, there is always a learning curve.
Since the restart, companions, like Rose and Clara, have laid the foundation for a regeneration, standing close to the new version as he finds his feet (his hands and his heart). New doctors have also discovered new companions, like Amy … err, and Rose.

While the last companion of Twelve was almost dead (although Bill had an end as happy as possible), it was inevitably question of beginners traveling this time.
The first companion we meet is Ryan and his tribute on YouTube to Grace, Grace, is kind of a good book for the episode, although initially he plays like a red clutter when he talks of the "greatest woman" that he has ever known.
He is a companion with an integrated and recognized challenge. He suffers from dyspraxia, a developmental disorder that presents problems of clumsiness and chronic coordination. This is a healthy teenager of 19 who can not ride a bike.
His frustration with another unsuccessful bike lesson is what led him to meet the Stenza Transport Container, which looks a lot like the chocolate kiss of a giant Hershey.
Until now, we know that Ryan is a caring grandson but a neglected son. He's adept at using social media and understanding and accepting The Doctor quite quickly, that's exactly what she says (once she's able to explain it). He is ready to face his challenges for the greater good.
Ryan's call to the police about the Kiss-shaped pod brings him closer to Yasmin Khan. She is a second-year probation police officer and is pinching a bit to investigate something more interesting than the public's quarreling over parking spaces.
By nature and training, she is more skeptical than Ryan. At first, she thinks he's making a joke, evoking a pod that just popped out of nowhere. However, she too is convinced that the doctor is something special.

We have not seen Yaz's family yet, but she does not hesitate to reconnect with Ryan as an old classmate. She is warm and friendly when Ryan recognizes him later.
She tries to play the game thoroughly, but the doctor, who recognizes the intention, takes the lead by emphasizing the futility of reporting something she does not have yet.
And that leaves us with Graham. He is a retired bus driver whose cancer is in remission. When the episode begins, he is married to Ryan's husband for three years and it is discovered after his funeral that they met and fell in love with his role as a chemo nurse.
We learn a lot about Graham through his interactions with Grace. Grace is the middle ground between him and Ryan. When the team needs to gather information, Ryan goes to the Internet, Graham goes to talk to his former coworkers and Grace chats with her nursing colleagues using the internet.

Grace is physically affectionate and direct. She makes Graham incredibly happy while pushing him out of his comfort zone. His first instinct is to help others. When she falls off the crane and that she knows that she is dying, her last thoughts are for Graham and how he will be when she is gone.
It's a perfectly matched couple, so it'll be interesting to see how the series deals with Graham's grief in future episodes.
Grace: Is it wrong to take advantage of that?

As for the adventure itself, it was a good thing. What was most impressive was to see how much Thirteen was able to juggle the very obvious discombobulation that she knew by trying to figure out what ball of sensitive and massive electric cables and an armored killer with a constraint of pulling them out. teeth do in Sheffield.
By taking over the role of the Doctor, it is somehow necessary to SEE the previous version in the new person as the regeneration process progresses. Whittaker did a remarkable job in channeling Capaldi's twelfth doctor into the scenes on the train, while The Doctor did not even realize she was a woman.
Do not panic. Not the end of the world. Well, it could be the end of the world but one thing at a time.
The doctor
There was a maniac when Twelve was faced with a dilemma that had to be solved with injustices that had to be corrected. Add to that the internal chaos of regeneration in a totally new person (with a thirst for fried egg sandwich) and Thirteen seems to surpass the hyper-impulse of the second act.
With so many companions running and a FIFTH human to save, the climactic confrontation with "Tim Shaw" has a fabulous reach. Standing at the top of construction cranes, facing a being with the tools for MELT. YOUR. DNA and giving him a chance to leave.
This is the gameplay par excellence of Doctor and that's why it was brilliant to be able to assert his identity at this moment.
I am the doctor, settling fair play across the universe.
The doctor
In the aftermath of the battle, the choice to spend time showing how Grace's death affected the team was a wise choice. When discussing the value of the family and how they manage the loss of their loved ones, The Doctor is able to talk about it as much as humans do.
I carry them with me. What they would have thought and said and done. Make a part of who I am. So, even though they left the world, they never left me.

And yet, it is said that she is not inviting any of the three men for her next adventure. After Clara and Bill, The Doctor might have understood, on a visceral level, that it was not a good idea for the humans she wanted to stay too close to him.
But, as they say, the best-laid plans of … well, the Doctor NEVER really been a mouse or a man, but since the episode ends with the four of them closing in space, we must assume a new plan. to be in the jobs quickly.
Overall, it was probably my favorite regeneration since the tenth doctor (my doctor). This made me laugh by basing the introductions on authentic relationships and emotion. And not once, did not Thirteen have to ask, "Am I a good man?"
