Doctor Who Tardis by Jodie Whittaker is a complete renovation of Peter Capaldi's mailbox

The Whovians know that with a brand new doctor, you have to plan a lot of other things: a new outfit, a new attitude and possibly a new companion (or three). The Thirteenth Doctor created his own sonic screwdriver in the first of the eleventh series, but in the second episode, Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who Tardis was finally revealed. At the end of the "Ghost Monument", Dr. Yaz, Ryan and Graham (played by Whittaker, Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh) finally enter the police box that travels back in time – and in its renovated interior is something quite special.

The refurbished exterior of the Tardis was revealed in 2017, while the Radio Times reports, in first-glance photographs of the holding of the thirteenth doctor. Whittaker's Tardis is a darker blue-gray, a fairly radical change from the bright blue police box ordered by Doctors Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. As the Radio Times points out, the new painting work bears a similarity to the Tardis era of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. "Perhaps a statement of intent to bring the Tardis back to its 2000s era?" the magazine suggests.

Other external changes spied by the Radio Times include the "police phone" sign, inverted black text on white background to white text on black background. The sign of St. John Ambulance on the right door of the Tardis has disappeared, while the lock and handle have changed places. There are also a few minor modifications to the Tardis windows, lamp and door panels.

But it's inside the thirteenth Doctor Tardis that has seen the most radical changes – as conceptual artist Darren Fereday promised on Twitter in August, according to the Radio Times. Fereday tweeted about the first time he learned that production designer Arwel Wyn Jones was planning to set up a police station, saying, "Her vision was crazy, she did not stop."

"You missed me," said the thirteenth Doctor when she found her Tardis. "You've been teased!" She enters and discovers something radically different from the old interior with purplish reflections. The walls look like a collision between a sequence of teeth and a honeycomb, while large pillars of amber (or honey!) Extend from floor to ceiling. The console itself is more rustic than that of the Twelfth Doctor, and in the case where it was made of solid metal (or what looked like it), the new version presents a hollow brass frame surmounting a slab – still – of Glowing amber.

The floor is also different: where Capaldi's Tardis had a shiny silver floor with lighted vents, Whittaker's gaze was quite organic – almost like magma shining through the tectonic plates of Earth's crust. Like Whittaker's brand new hand-crafted sonic screwdriver, his Tardis has a much more earthly feel, as if he were carved into the throat of a volcano.

Oh, and there is also a pastry creamer.

"I really like it," said the doctor, impressed, as she followed her brand new Tardis from Yaz, Ryan and Graham. Me too, doctor!
