Doctors remind people of Diabetes Awareness Month

HELENA – Throughout November, organizations across the country rallied to raise awareness about diabetes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. The number of adults diagnosed has tripled in the last 20 years and, in Montana, the DPPHS indicates that 64,000 adults are currently diagnosed with diabetes.

Dr. Brian Robinson, Endocrinologist at St. Peter's Health in Helena, said that obesity and diabetes are linked. According to Robinson, part of the blame can be attributed to the high-calorie foods common in American diets.

"All over the world, in the United States and Montana, high calorie foods are becoming more affordable and people are moving from a lower social class to a more average social class where food is more affordable. Said Robinson. "People are gaining weight and so diabetes is becoming more prevalent."

Dr. Robinson said small positive changes can contribute to great health improvements. Walking short distances instead of driving and splitting a large meal in half is one or two things you can do to prevent the onset of diabetes.
