The Los Angeles Dodgers are heading back to the National League championship series. This time, they defeated the Atlanta Braves in four games thanks to Monday's 6-2 win.
Here are 10 things to know about the fourth game and / or the LNDS.
1. Braves bad defense, Bellinger speed and Freese clutch in sixth position
The round should have been completed. With two outs and a runner in the front row, Yasiel Puig took off a big fly in the shallow right field. Neither the second baseman, Ozzie Albies – who seemed to let go of the assumption that he was called back – nor right-field player Nick Markakis took the ball. Instead, he fell in and the Dodgers ended up scoring two to take the lead.
Earlier in the inning, Bellinger hit a rocket on second base and that could have been a double play. However, he flew along the line and the Braves did not even try to throw to first base after to have recovered the strength to the second. According to Statcast, Bellinger is the fastest baseball player in baseball and is tied with Javier Baez among other positions.
Now with two on and two out, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has called David Freese to touch him. During the attack, Puig easily stole second place, which meant both tied and starting races were in the scoring position. Freese arrived in the clutch, delivering a simple line to center.
The Dodgers had a 3-2 lead.
2. Dodgers dropped the hammer on the seventh; Machado stars
After the next round, Justin Turner started with a single and Max Muncy drew a four-step alley and it felt like things were going to break out. With the overwork of the Braves' shallower enclosure, it was only a matter of time before the Dodgers walked on the accelerator. Indeed, Manny Machado is given a lot of trouble to put away the game and the series:
Machado, the future free agent, scored 2 goals against 5 with a double, a home run and four points produced for the match. He had only three hits in the series, but all opted for extra bases and ran home runs (2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI).
3. Snitker was aggressive with pitching again
In the third game, the Braves' manager, Brian Snitker, showed himself aggressive in removing the pitchers, as should be done in case of elimination. Obviously, as a result of a 2-1 defeat in the best five series, the Braves once again have their proverbial backs against the wall. Although Mike Foltynewicz was far from perfect, he made a good start, but his place in the batting order put the riders in second and third places, with two outs at the bottom of the fourth. Snitker chose to hit with Kurt Suzuki. Suzuki attributed to him in advance:
One could say that Snitker may have stretched his pen too much at Games 3 and 4, but they needed those points and he was able to stay alive. I have no problem with that.
4. Madson bailed defense in fifth
In the fifth inning, the Dodgers defense gave the Braves a golden opportunity. With a withdrawal, Freddie Freeman made a single in the field that could easily have been considered a mistake on Justin Turner. Once Nick Markakis left, Johan Camargo hit a double ball, but Machado threw the ball. Suddenly, the basics were loaded with an output.
The Dodgers' manager, Dave Roberts, decided to call on Rich Hill and turned to Ryan Madson's late-season acquisition. With a heavy diet of pellets, Madson pushed Tyler Flowers to take it to the receiver, then Ender Inciarte to move gently to Machado to end the threat.
5. Additions in season are huge
As stated, Andrew Friedman and the company acquired Madson during the season. Also note who drove in the races in this game: Machado and Freese. Machado was born thanks to the presence of Corey Seager for the season. The other two players are an example of how adding depth to the big league lineup can be very important in October.
6. Venters with a loss of luck
Jonny Venters is a beautiful story. He is back in the big leagues after three surgeries at Tommy John and he has not been in a season since 2012.
In this game, he entered the game at the top of the fifth to face the top of the powerful batting command of the Dodgers. He went through a free round and should have gone through two. See above for the sixth round. It should have been two innings pitched with zero points allowed for the Venters. Instead, a reliever has dropped his two points and Venters must leave two earned runs in 1 2/3. As such, he took the loss.
7. Dodgers hit the first
In general, the playoff teams that score first tend to win. Of course, we will see returns and that is what makes the sport excellent, but scoring first is a big problem. The Dodgers did it in the fourth game even before the Braves hit. Foltynewicz recorded the first two outings of the match, but then Muncy was out on four courts and Machado jumped on the first pitch for a double RBI. It was so fast and it was already 1-0 Dodgers.
8. Duda nearly closed it
At the end of the eighth round, Lucas Duda, the striker's striker, showed up with the Braves eliminated by four points. There were riders on the first and third goals. He absolutely crushed an offer from Kenta Maeda that could have been a home run on the upper deck, but the blame was several feet. Dude, that would have been something. Instead, Duda would fly away.
9. MVP: Justin Turner
There is no official MVP in the divisional series, but we will name one here for fun. I'm going with Turner. I thought Clayton Kershaw was so dazzling in the second game of a 3-0 win as well, so consider him perhaps as the most helpful co-player. Damn, Hyun-Jin Ryu also played in the first match.
Turner hit .37 / .500 / .429 in the series. He walked four times without being noticed. Muncy and Machado come behind him, putting a lot of pressure on the opposing stick.
10. Go from the front
It's certainly a difficult task for fans of Braves, but the bottom line is that this season has been incredibly prosperous. Almost no one thought they were playing this season, let alone winning the NL East, but they did. Ronald Acuna, Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Mike Foltynewicz, Sean Newcomb and many others are solid foundations. Stay away from this series and fans of the Braves will return to 2018 with a lot of affection.
As for the Dodgers, they will play in their third NLCS follow-up game. They split the first two against the Cubs, but now it's the Brewers. The Brewers will have an extra day of rest and a stellar pen. The Dodgers are shooting at full speed right now. Games 1 and 2 will take place at Miller Park in Milwaukee on Friday and Saturday.
