President Trump on Saturday called for the application of the death penalty to those who kill in the name of anti-Semitism and other hateful ideologies.
"They have to pay the ultimate price," said Trump.
He added that the long history of persecutions against the Jews had to end.
"Those seeking their destruction, we will seek their destruction," said Mr. Trump at a campaign rally in Illinois.
Mr. Trump considered canceling the rally but decided to continue because he refused to let the gunman's hatred dictate his schedule.
He said the death penalty was the appropriate sanction for such attacks.
"When you have crimes like this, whether this one or some other group, we have to bring back the death penalty. They have to pay the ultimate price, "said Trump. "We have to draw a line in the sand and say very loudly:" Never again "."
