One of the most prolific smugglers in NFL history has added a remarkable record to his long list of Hall of Fame achievements.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees broke Peyton Manning's all-time record with 71,940 yards in the second quarter of Monday night's game against the Washington Redskins. He scored the mark on a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre Quan Smith. He needed 201 yards to overtake Manning's mark – TD gave him 228 yards tonight and the Saints a 26-13 lead.
This 39-year-old appellant was honored at a brief stoppage of the game after breaking the record. He was cheered by players and supporters at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome of New Orleans while he was snuggling with his family and owner of Saints Gayle Benson. The ball caught by Smith was given to David Baker, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for posting in Canton, Ohio.
Brees entered the game for the third time in history with 71,740 passing yards, before passing number 2 Brett Favre (71,838). Brees is about 5,000 yards ahead of the next active player in the assists list – No. 4 Tom Brady with 67,077 losses.
Brees passed Favre's total on a 6-yard pass to Alvin Kamara in the second quarter.
It also took fewer games to Brees than Manning to 71,740 yards – Brees managed the feat in 253 games compared to 266 for Manning. It also has a higher end-of-career percentage (67.1) in Manning (65.3) and Favre (62.0). He overtook Favre earlier this season to become the NFL's all-time completion leader.
Brees told reporters this week that he "would never have dreamed" of breaking the record bar when he entered the league with the San Diego Chargers in 2001. He said "extremely grateful" for being able to break the record. but added that his goal in the match was to beat Washington without setting the record.
Manning took a timeout after preparing dinner to congratulate Brees for breaking the record (and congratulating him for breaking his TD record, which should fall into the hands of Brees next season):
