While the New Orleans Saints prepare to host the Cleveland Browns Sunday, Saints Drew Brees praised the rookie Browns Baker Mayfield.
"I think it can be a lot better than me," Brees said of the No. 1 pick in 2018 on Wednesday, by Pat McManamon of ESPN.com.
These are high expectations.
Brees had a modest start in his NFL career after being taken by the San Diego Chargers after the second round in 2001. After leaving San Diego for New Orleans in 2006, his career took off. .
He completed 68.2% of his passes in 12 years and over in Saints uniform, totaling more than 58,000 yards and 411 touchdowns. He led the league seven times while passing the 5,000-yard field by five. As for personal honors, he has won two NFL offensive player awards of the year and has been named in 11 Pro Bowls.
And of course, Brees led the Saints to their first Lombardi Trophy with a 31-17 win over the Colts of Indianapolis, led by Peyton Manning, in the Super Bowl. XLIV while earning MVP honors.
Despite being taken with the first overall pick in April, Mayfield Behind Tyrod Taylor on the graph in depth. While Mayfield may not have played in the regular NFL season yet, Brees liked what he saw from the winner of the Heisman Trophy in Oklahoma.
"I followed his academic career," Brees said. "He could not have been more impressed by what he was able to accomplish, especially last year." Really impressed by how he plays the game. He is a great competitor. "
The 6th "1" Mayfield Because of his size, he made comparisons with the 6 "0 Brees before the draft, and although both teams have an outstanding university career, the rookie has a long way to go before he can be compared to the star of Saints at the professional level.
Yes Mayfield can bring together a summary like Brees', however, the Browns (or the teams for which he plays) will be thrilled.
