NEW ORLEANS – Drew Brees is now the leading passer in the history of the NFL.
The 39-year-old New Orleans Saints quarterback broke Peyton Manning's career record with 71,940 career passes Monday night, ahead of Manning and Brett Favre.
And he spent Manning dramatically, with a 62-yard touchdown pass to rookie Tre & Quan Smith to give the Saints a 26-6 lead in the second quarter of Monday's game against the Washington Redskins. He did it in front of a national audience at prime time and in front of the public of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
As expected, the NFL ended the match to recognize its success and Brees seemed moved by waving his hand and kissing the crowd. He then personally handed the ball over to David Baker, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brees's wife, Brittany, and her children were also on the sidelines for cuddles and kisses.
Brees is one of the best quarterbacks of all time: barely 6 feet tall, barely recruited in high school, he fell to the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the NFL draft at Purdue in 2001 in the league when he became a free agent after a shoulder injury that threatened his career in 2005.
But it was at that time that he came to New Orleans and his career took off. Sean Payton, coach of the Brees and Saints, has formed one of the most prolific duos in NFL history in the past 13 years, including a Super Bowl victory after the 2009 season.

Brees also holds the NFL records for most career supplements and the highest percentage of completion. He set the season pass record in one season in 2011 with 5,476 (before Manning surpassed it by one meter in 2013). And he has ridden more than 5,000 yards five times over the last ten years – something no other quarter has ever done more than once.
"It's crazy, I would never have dreamed," admitted Brees last week, while insisting that it was not time to think and what he wanted try to keep your weekly routine as normal as possible. "I would not be here without Sean Payton," said Brees. Saints on the run Mark Ingram II joked that Brees had broken so many records that Monday night would be "another day in teammate Drew Brees's life".
"[But] it's special, just to know that no one in the game did what you did. And that says a lot [about] Ingram said. He works every day to be the best and he deserves it. So we are all behind him and we all want to see him get all the records he has recorded because he deserves it. "
