Researchers at Penn State University recently conducted a study published in the journal Sleep to determine the relationship between sleep and hydration status.

To do this, they examined more than 20,000 adults in the United States and China. Participants were required to provide a urine sample so that analysts could determine their level of hydration. They also answered questions about their sleep patterns.

After analyzing the results, they found that the urine in their systems was significantly more concentrated in those who slept only six hours per night, compared to those who had eight hours. They also stated that those who slept six hours were 59% more likely to be poorly hydrated than adults eight hours later.

"If you only sleep six hours a night, it can affect your hydration state," said co-author Asher Rosinger in a statement. "This study suggests that if you do not get enough sleep and feel sick or tired the next day, drink more water."

Scientists believe that vasopressin, a hormone that regulates hydration in the body, is responsible for the link between hydration and sleep.

"Vasopressin is released faster and later in the sleep cycle," Rosinger explained. "So, if you wake up earlier, you may miss that window in which a greater amount of hormone is released, disrupting the body's hydration."

Dehydration can negatively affect many systems and functions of the body. It can affect your cognition, mood, and physical performance, and can lead to more serious problems such as urinary tract infections and kidney stones.
