A driving instructor was charged with driving under the influence Saturday after his own students called him by police, Suffolk County police said.

Russell Cohen, 58, of Ridge, has been arrested and charged with impaired driving and three counts of endangering the well-being of a child, police said.

Cohen, driving instructor at the Suffolk Auto Driving School, was teaching four students around 11 am when they began to suspect that he was drunk, police said. The students told Cohen that they were hungry and asked him to stop at a McDonald's on Middle Country Road in Centereach. At McDonald's, students called 911, the police said.

When the students did not come back in time, Cohen left, the police said. Around 11:45 am on Highway 25 and the Montauk Trail at Ridge, Cohen turned his 2012 Honda Accord into a 2008 Honda Civic, police said.

The Civic was driven by a 29-year-old Shoreham woman. She suffered injuries that did not threaten life. She was treated at the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, police said.

Cohen will be brought before the first district court of Central Islip, police said. No date for the indictment has been given.
