Drunken hotel guests swing the sword off his bride on the day of her wedding, say the cops

The happy day of a couple became violent on Saturday when a guest at the hotel who was hosting their wedding came to the bride with a sword, officials said Sussex County.

The bride, whose name is currently held, suffered a non-serious cut on her left arm.

The bride and her wedding group were celebrating her wedding Saturday at the Grand Cascades Lodge in Hardyston, when the incident occurred, said the first Deputy Attorney, Gregory Mueller.

In a hallway of the hotel, Carlos Mejia, a 43-year-old hedge fund manager in New York, who was at the hotel on business, reportedly approached the group and asked him if he had a cigarette in reserve.

When the husband said that they did not have a cigarette, or did not give it to him, a verbal fight started, Mueller said. Police said witnesses observed Mejia screaming obscenities before returning to her hotel room.

Mueller said the bride's party knocked on her door and shouted at Mejia through the door. When he opened it, he would have emerged with a sword in his hand, the police said.

Mejia started swinging the sword at the bridal party and threatened to kill her. Mejia would then have swung the sword and cut off the bride's arm.

The security of the hotel detained Mejia until police arrived and he was disarmed by several guests, Mueller said.

Witnesses at the hotel told the police that he had been seen walking around the hotel with the sword before the fight and police reports show that an officer present noticed that Mejia was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Mueller told NJ Advance Media that the prosecutor's office had never seen an incident like this before.

"It's a really unique case," he said on Wednesday.

Mejia is now facing aggravated assault, a third degree terrorism charge, a third degree possession charge, and an offense of harassment by third degree disordered persons.

Mueller said Mejia was released from prison on Tuesday, under certain conditions, pending trial.

The details of how he came to interact with the members of the wedding and the incident itself are still under investigation.
