HMS Queen Elizabeth makes her maiden voyage from Portsmouth to the United States

Royal Navy sailors from the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (3.1 billion pounds) were arrested in Florida, said a Marine spokeswoman.

Sailors on the ground began to fight and urinate in public, according to local newspaper reports.

Six crew members were arrested Wednesday for drunkenness and disorderly charges, said Sgt Larry Smith of the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.

At least one sailor was killed after resisting the arrest, the reports added.

A Navy spokesman said: "We can confirm that a number of naval personnel are assisting the US police in their investigations. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this point.

"The Naval Service attaches great importance to maintaining the highest possible standards of behavior of its personnel at all times."

On August 18, HMS Queen Elizabeth, the newest British aircraft carrier, departed Portsmouth for the United States.

The 65,000-ton warship's voyage was docked at the Mayport Naval Station on Wednesday.

Its first operational deployment is scheduled for 2021.
