DAVIE, Fla. (AP) – The Miami Dolphins released defensive tackle Jordan Phillips on Tuesday after his angry attack after losing to New England.
"Finally free, finally free," wrote Phillips in an Instagram post that was later removed. "Good luck to my brothers in the team I will miss you, but I could not be happier to be outside … Sometimes you have to put your future between them and live with it."
Phillips and the other four ahead of Miami were dominated Sunday in the 38-7 loss to the Patriots, who rushed for 175 yards.
Phillips said his thrust during the match had not played a role in his release.
"Just here to crush that kind of thing on the sidelines of the campaign … this decision has nothing to do with it," he tweeted.
The Dolphins (3-1) had a day off and did not explain the reason for the move. On Monday, coach Adam Gase defended the substitute pattern of coach Kris Kocurek's defensive line.
The Dolphins also placed center Daniel Kilgore in the injured reserve with a triceps injury. They hired center Wesley Johnson and promoted defensive end Cameron Malveaux to the training team.
Johnson, who will become Miami's rescue center behind Travis Swanson, made 24 starts for the New York Jets in 2015-17 and was with the Detroit Lions at the training camp this year. Malveaux played four games as a rookie last year.
Phillips was a second-round pick in 2015 with 26 starts and forged a reputation for inconsistent underperformance. He left the bench this season as part of the rotation of the defensive line and collected a bag and five tackles.
Gase has often spoken of his desire to improve the team's culture after a 6-10 season in 2017.
