Duke Players Hit NBA Free Agency

The free agency period of the NBA will start at 12:01 am Eastern Time on Sunday, and some former Duke Blue Devils may be on the move. Although no movement can be formalized before noon on July 6, teams are free to negotiate with players and players can accept qualifying offers, sign offers sheets if they are restricted free agents, or have their bilateral contracts converted

So, which former Blue Devils are free agents?

• JJ Redick Philadelphia 76ers (Unrestricted): Redick had one of his best year seasons for the Sixers. He was their 2nd leading scorer, their best shooter and a seasoned presence in a young team that moved the needle into the East Conference. The Sixers are one of the teams with a shot at the LeBron James contest, so much of Redick's future may depend on whether the Sixers are succeeding in attracting LeBron to the city of brotherly love. There is probably no scenario where LeBron and Redick can both sign up with Philly without unloading one of their younger pieces, so Redick may be in wait-and-see mode right from the start
• Seth Curry Dallas Mavericks [19659004] (no restrictions): Seth Curry missed the entire season due to a stress fracture in his leg, but he had performed well for the Mavericks before the injury. He always has a terrible shot and it might be useful somewhere, but it depends on whether he has recovered. Expect to leave the Mavericks for another team that needs a shooter at a lower cost.
• Rodney Hood Cleveland Cavaliers (Limited): Hood had his best season last season. Utah Jazz and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He is athletic and can be a 3-D wing with consistency. Cleveland seems to be very high on him, so it's likely that he stays in The Land.
• Jahlil Okafor Brooklyn Nets (unrestricted): Big Jah may find that there are not many suitors, if any, for his services the season next. It must be much better to protect the rim, to defend and to be an imposing inner presence at the offensive end. It's unclear where he will end, but he'll probably not have more of a bench role next season if he's in the NBA.
• Jabari Parker Milwaukee Bucks (Restricted): Jabari finally returned to the Bucks this season with a torn ACL, but although he did show a glimpse of the talent that he had. he clearly, he was not very regular. This could be partly due to the fact that he does not fully trust his re-equipped body and knee, but he has the talent to be a terrific bench player next season and the starter spot. Will it be Milwaukee? They can match any bid, but if a team appreciates its ability to lead the field while providing a wing presence, it could get an offer that the Bucks do not want to match.
• Amile Jefferson [19659004] Minnesota Timberwolves (Restricted): Amile Jefferson did not play a minute for the Timberwolves last season, but he played well enough for his affiliate to G-League, Iowa Wolves, either converted to a standard contract at the end of the season. He was on the T-Wolves playoff list but did not play. There should be a market for all of Jefferson's skills. He is a great man who is a great bouncer, can protect the rim, and knows where to be on the field. Let's hope the T-Wolves decide to give him another contract because it fits well with what they're trying to do.
• Marshall Plumlee Milwaukee Bucks (Restricted Two-Way): Marshall Plumlee spent most of the season with the Wisconsin herd of the G-League on a two-man contract with the Bucks. He appeared in 8 games last season for Milwaukee, but it's hard to say where he'll finish. He is a restricted bilateral free agent, which means that for the Bucks to retain their rights, all they have to do is offer him another bilateral contract. This may be his best option at this stage as it is difficult to determine if another team would offer him a full NBA contract.

The free agency period can be dominated by names like LeBron James, Paul George and even Kawhi Leonard, but it will be interesting to see what uniforms the brotherhood will wear next season.
