"In 2007, the first time I watched this show, I was holding my baby in my arms and I was four inches away from the TV screen," she recalls. "I said I wanted to be the first blind competitor on Dance with the stars – I threw it to the universe, and life made a full circle and came back and gave me my dream. "

And while she admitted that she thought she was "punished" when the offer came to fruition this year, the listing was a no-brainer.

"It was something I always wanted to do but I did not think I could do it," she said. "Artem m learns that it is possible and that I live every day possible."

"This trip has been so exceptional and inspiring for me because I have never been in this situation," she added. "Dancing, it's really being visual, and not being aware of it, it's really difficult – so much more rewarding. When you see the movements coming together, it's amazing. I am extremely proud.

Umstead also said that Chigvintsev was an incredible partner so far.

"It's not easy for me just because I have a disability," she said. "He always pushes me. I am a hard worker and an athlete and I want to be pushed to my vulnerable point and beyond, and he does it. He gives me no excuse and that is what I want from a partner.

Throughout her training, Umstead did not allow her husband, Rob, to watch because she wanted to surprise him with the finished product. Like the judges, he was blown away.

"I am very proud," said Umstead. "I was really vulnerable there, but I showed my true emotions. Being the first blind dancer in the series is a moment of pride.

"I'm excited and hope to show America what Artem has taught me," she added. "And, hopefully, we can do a lot more because he is an amazing coach, an amazing teacher and I consider him an amazing friend."

the Dance with the stars the first continues Tuesday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
