ZEBULON, Georgia – A linebacker from Pike County High School High School (Georgia) seriously injured during a Friday night football game has passed away.

According to school officials, the young Dylan Thomas died at the hospital around 8 pm Sunday's injuries suffered during Friday night's game against Peach County High School.

Thomas was transported from the field in an ambulance to the WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital, near Griffin, before being transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, for treatment. Pike County located about 50 miles south of downtown Atlanta.

The players, coaches and supporters of both teams gathered in the field in prayer as Thomas was removed from the field before the restart of the game.

Thomas was operated on a few hours later, but remained hospitalized Saturday night in a coma.

Nick Burgess, Dylan's uncle, wrote in an article published on social media Sunday morning that Thomas had swelling of the brain, which would likely leave his chances of being the same, thin.

11Alive contacted the Pike County School Superintendent, Dr. Michael Duncan, on Sunday morning, who said he would "go around the carts for this family".

After the announcement of Thomas' death, friends, students and other members of the community flooded social media tributes to the high school student.
